US Navy SEALs History - In the Beginning
On May 25, 1961 President John F. Kennedy addressed the US Congress on the need for the establishment of a Naval Special Forces unit and by December of that year, the US Navy SEALs were operational. The seeds for the formation of this elite Special Forces unit had been sown in World War II and found fertile ground in the mind of an extraordinary warrior; Roy Boehm. The story of the US Navy SEALs starts with Roy Boehm - the Godfather of all SEALs.
Boehm became a Navy diver and served in extensive combat operations in the Pacific theater until the end of the war. Boehm went through Underwater demolition Team training in 1955 where his wartime diving experience was put to good use testing underwater equipment and submersibles. He also infiltrated Cuba gathering intelligence and also trained some of the Cuban expatriates that took part in the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. It is at this point that Ray Boehm and President Kennedy collided. After the Bay of Pigs failure, Boehm publically pointed the finger at the President for losing his nerve and withdrawing US support. A furious President Kennedy summonsed Boehm to the White House and fully expecting to be court martialled Boehm defended his actions with a no nonsense outline of what had gone wrong and how the President could have delivered a success. An impressed Kennedy authorized Boehm to form the US Navy SEALs in 1960 with a Presidential Order after recognizing the value of Boehms' ideas put into practice. Boehm had gotten away with his mouth but now he had to deliver results. |
