In use by U.S. military forces since the early 1970s, it served as a replacement of the stand-alone M79 grenade launcher.

This attachment is a better alternative to the M79 because it allows the user to switch between rifle and grenade launcher. There are 8 different rounds for the M203: M406 High-explosive (or H-E) round; M433 High-Explosive Dual Purpose round; M585 White Star Cluster; M651 Tactical CS Grenade; M781 Practice round; Star Parachute (White, Green and Red); Ground Marker (Red, Green and Yellow); and M576 Buckshot (or “Beehive”).

The standard M203 is meant for permanent attachment to M16A1, M16A2 and M16A3 rifles, with a 12” barrel. The M203A1 (American version) is for use with M4 and M4A1 Carbine, with a 9” barrel.

The M60 is a gas-operated, air-cooled, belt-fed, automatic machine gun firing from the open-bolt position, chambered for the 7.62mm NATO cartridge. During Vietnam, the original version of was used as a squad automatic weapon, with each soldier carrying additional 200 linked rounds of ammunition, a spare barrel or both. The M60E3 Machine Gun is an M60-variant, lightweight, updated version of the M60 with a bipod attached to the receiver, ambidextrous safety, universal sling attachments, carrying handle on the barrel and a simplified gas system. However, due to design flaws created by the updates to the M60, it was phased out in favor of the M60E4.

The Mk 43 Mod 0 is the Navy SEALs version of the M60E4; it looks similar to the M60E3 with several internal changes. An obvious difference between Mk 43 and M60E4s is the barrel length, and the fact that it can be used as either a suppressive or direct fire weapon. The M60 series weapons have primarily been replaced by the M240 family of weapons, despite the fact that the M240s are a few pounds heavier.

The M240 machine gun is a belt-fed, gas-operated, air-cooled, crew-served, fixed headspace weapon using 7.62mm rounds. This family of weapons has been in use by U.S. armed forces since the mid-1980s, with the M240B model in current use by the U.S. Army and USMC. The M240B features a hydraulic buffer system to reduce recoil.

The M249 SAW light machine gun is a gas-operated, air-cooled, quick-change barrel weapon with folding bipod and M192 LGM tripod available. It uses 5.56mm round and can be fed from linked ammunition or STANAG magazines as used in M16 and M4, allowing the gunner to use a rifleman’s magazines in an emergency (although this can cause malfunctions). The M249 Special Purpose Weapon (SPW) has no carrying handle, magazine insertion well or vehicle mounting lug in order to reduce its weight. It features a collapsible buttstock and Picatinny rails were added for mounting of optics, lasers or other M4 SOPMOD kit accessories.

The standard-issue M4A1 with SOPMOD Accessory Kit is a gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed, selective fire weapon using 5.56mm rounds. It has a four-position telescoping stock, which is slightly larger than the M4, with a curvature at the end. The M4A1 is a fully-automatic variant of the M4 for use by special operations members, useful in urban warfare and preferred for Close Quarters Combat (CQB) because it is compact and powerful. The SOPMOD Accessory Kit includes a Rail Interface System (RIS); shortened quick-detachable M203 grenade launcher and leaf sight; KAC sound suppressor and back-up rear sight; AN/PEQ-2A visible laser/infrared designator; Trijicon’s ACOG and Reflex sights; and night vision sight.

The AR-15 (civilian) or M16 (military) uses 5.56mm rounds, has been in use by U.S. military forces since Vietnam. In 1967, the M16A1 version was in use until 1970, when it was supplemented by the M16A2. The U.S. Navy issued the M16A3, a fully-automatic variant of the M16A2, primarily for SEAL, Seabee and Security units. The M16A4 is now being supplemented; this variant includes a flattop receiver unit and Picatinny rail system. In 2003, the SOF Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) or Mk 16 won the USSOCOM competition to find a new rifle for Special Operations Forces.

The United States Navy SEALs (or Sea Air Land) is an elite force whose origins date back to the UDT (Underwater Demolition Team) of World War II. In 1943, the UDT began training for Atlantic and Pacific invasion duty, charting beaches and destroying obstacles blocking amphibious landings. In the beginning, UDTs used no air tanks, face masks or swim fins. Their only weapons were inflated bags (called Hagensen packs) filled with twenty pounds of explosives, used to destroy rocks or coral underwater. The UDTs (also called Frogmen) began their first inland missions in Korea, during 1950.

Several years later, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy established the SEALs as the first unconventional U.S. military force. Because of the guerilla-type war tactics during Vietnam, he recognized the need for a small, elite force to combat these techniques. Beginning in 1964, the SEALs disrupted the Vietcong political infrastructure in the Mekong Delta, targeting high-ranking Vietcong and NVA (North Vietnamese Army) officials. These specialized squads of 2 to 7 men kidnapped, ambushed and infiltrated enemy camps with great force and effect.

Since their inception, the Navy SEALs have been given a great deal of latitude in the type of weapons they use to complete their missions. Weapon choices vary widely, depending upon the preference of the individual, their skill set and specific weapons currently available. Typical SEAL weapons include the standard-issue M4A1 carbine assault rifle and a secondary weapon (usually a 9mm pistol) used as backup. However, the range of weapons chosen by team members can vary widely, including assault rifles, sniper rifles, submachine and machine guns, combat shotguns, grenade launchers, mortars and anti-tank rockets.
