Becoming a volunteer is a good choice, especially if you have a lot of free time. In fact, you can always spend your leisure time by helping others through your little ways. In recent years, among the well-received campaigns are those that aim to support the troops. Americans are encouraged to express their military pride by sending letters to military relatives, purchasing gifts for soldiers, extending veteran support thru military charities, or volunteering in army support groups.
If you’re one of those who are looking for ways on rendering your free time in civic activities, here are a few tips on how to become a volunteer.
- Research – look for the best organization that will best suit your interest. Also take time to know what issues and causes are most important to you. Some of the communities that you can volunteer are neighborhood watch programs, prisons, disaster relief organizations, youth organizations, intergenerational programs, veterans service organizations, programs for the wounded soldiers and military families, and park services.
- Do not wait to be asked – organizations typically recruit for volunteers but do not wait until you are asked before joining activities. Ask your friends or search for non-profit organizations through the Internet.
- Prepare for interviews – some organizations require interviews to help them get to know you better. For this reason, be ready to describe your interests, qualifications, and background.
- Think out of the box – consider some organizations that offer training and professional development opportunities for their volunteers.
- Consider group as a family– volunteering is a great opportunity to know other people and gain new friends. When you volunteer, make sure that you have the heart and passion to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of being a volunteer, otherwise; you will not enjoy the tasks. Treat your co-workers not just as mere teammates but as a second family in order to get all the work done together.
- Be a virtual volunteer – some organizations function through the Internet. Hence, even if you are from afar, you can always help your favorite organization online. Take advantage of the Internet and browse lists of online organizations that you can work for.
- Go the extra mile – volunteering may not be enough. There’d be times you’ll have to share ideas to help the organization grow. Do not hesitate to talk to your coordinator or supervisor about your ideas; you’ll never know how many more people you can help with your creativity.
