Navy SEAL Weapons: M224 60mm mortar

M224 60mm mortar

The M224 60mm lightweight mortar is a smooth bore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon for close support of ground troops. The M224 system is made up of the cannon, bipod, baseplate and sight unit.

This Navy SEALs weapon system replaced the World War II era M2 and M19 Mortar weapons; it uses new, longer-range ammunition while retaining the ability to fire older types. Six types of ammunition can be fired from the M224: High explosive, white phosphorous, illumination, training practice, infrared illumination and full range practice cartridges.
