Posted July 28th, 2009 by Navy SEAL

The M60E3 is a light machine gun firing 7.62mm NATO standard rounds providing heavy firepower and requiring one operator. Air-cooled, gas operated it is tried and tested through four decades of use on operations by all branches of the US military and other forces worldwide.

US Navy SEALs use two variants, the M60E3 ( a lightweight model) and the M60E4 (designated by the US Navy as MK43 Mod 0).

The MK43 Mod 0 was developed in the 90’s specifically for SEAL use and has a shorter assault barrel and provides excellent weight for firepower ratio. In the hands of a skilled operator it can provide area suppressing fire on targets at ranges up to 1,500 meters and is capable of being fired with acuracy from the shoulder.

The M60 and its variants are being replaced by the M240 which is heavier but provides greater reliability and easier field maintenance.
