7 Ways to Spot a Fake Navy SEAL

Posted July 28th, 2009 by Navy SEAL

Becoming a Navy SEAL isn’t easy but graduating from training is definitely going to earn you some bragging rights. That’s why it’s no surprise that you’re going to find quite a few people out there pretending to be or to have been a Navy SEAL. If you’re not sure whether to believe their claim or not, here are seven ways to spot someone who isn’t being legitimate.

#7 – Doesn’t Remember the Details

If you’re a Navy SEAL, you’re going to be able to recall some important details, such as your class number (refers to the group you graduated training with) and the names of your superior officers. These aren’t unimportant details to a Navy SEAL so if someone can’t tell you this information then they aren’t a SEAL.

#6 – Skipped Training

One of the common excuses for why a fake Navy SEAL can’t remember the number of his graduating class is that he didn’t have to go through the training. This is usually because he was so exceptional or because he tested out of the training. No one is allowed to skip the training, regardless of their skills or background.

#5 – Dressed Too Obvious

While a real Navy SEAL isn’t going to dress in a way to call attention to his military service, fake ones do. They wear camouflage clothing covered in medals and other symbols of their greatness. This is not something a real Navy SEAL would do. Chances are the person has just been shopping at the army surplus store.

#4 – Brags About Medals

Another one of the tell tale signs of a fake Navy SEAL is that he will spend a lot of time bragging about the medals he’s wearing. Again, this is a definite sign of a fake. Real SEALs do not like to bring attention to their accomplishments in the military. Be very leery if the person claims to have been awarded the Medal of Honor. This highest honor is most frequently awarded after a soldier has died in the line of duty, usually while saving others.

#3 – Brags About Killing

Navy SEALs don’t enjoy killing people. It’s not an easy thing to do, and it’s definitely not something they would want to be bragging about. Most soldiers are disturbed by having to take the life of other people and don’t take this job lightly.

#2 – Says He is a Member of Team 6

People outside the Navy SEALs probably don’t know that Team 6 is an extremely elite group within the program. Very few people actually get into this team, although anyone wanting to brag about being a Navy SEAL when he really isn’t one would probably make the claim.

#1 – Is a Woman or Claims to Have Served with Women

In the history of the Navy SEALS, no woman has ever been one. Any woman claiming to be part of the program and any man claiming to have served along with women is clearly not telling the truth.

There is a bluegrass music player, whose family group band called the “Cherryholmes” who has often claimed to be an ex Navy Seal. You should investigate this guy and publish the facts. His name is Jere Cherryholmes and he continues to present himself as an ex Navy Seal. As a Vietnam Veteran and a patriotic man, I find this extremely offensive to the men that really did become the elite Seals. The man lives in Nashville, TN and you can easily google his name and see some of the comments wherein fans compliment his “service” as a Seal.
